The forest fire near America’s second largest city Los Angeles remained out of control for the fourth day since Tuesday morning. The fire has badly burnt a large portion of the fashionably dressed Los Angeles city and burnt more than 10,000 buildings to ashes. Despite lakhs of rescue efforts, 11 people have lost their lives and more than 180,000 people have had to leave their homes.
Dry weather is thwarting fire control efforts
Two lakh others have been called to be prepared to shift to safer places. The strong wind and dry climate of the place is hindering fire control attempts. This is being termed the worst tragedy California state has seen so far. The fire from the spark created in Pacific Palisades had prevented itself from going towards Hollywood-the pride of film town.
All the means were employed to prevent the fire from spreading to Hollywood Hills. This attempt succeeded, but in other sections, due to strong winds, the progress of destruction is not being slowed down. So far, it has consumed at least 36 thousand acres (56 square miles) of land and burned everything there to ashes.
The Los Angeles County Fire spread five directions through the boundaries by air.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has commented that looking at the destruction, it seems that a nuclear bomb has been dropped on the city. So far, the fire has caused an estimated loss of property worth $150 billion. This can put a heavy financial burden on the insurance companies operating in the area. The fire in Los Angeles
County has spread in five directions by air.
In a massive effort to control the fire, water and fire extinguishing chemicals are being dropped from planes and helicopters. The government also rented a huge-sized Super Scooper aircraft from Canada for this job, but after colliding with a private drone, it had to be grounded. US President Joe Biden termed this fire a major disaster.
Anger at government’s step to contain the fire
Vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said the federal government will complete 100 percent of relief measures in 180 days. These will include salaries to lifting the debris of destroyed buildings. But many victims do not trust efforts by the government. 63-year-old Kay Young, from the weaker section, is crying sitting on the stairs of her house destroyed by fire. She does not believe that anyone can restore her house, which is the victim-houses’ residence, to its former state. Quite a number of people who have been affected by the fire have also been heard raging against measures taken by the government to control fire.
Fire raging at five places, extinguished at three places
The fire is still out of control on 20 thousand acres of land between Santa Monica and Malibu in Los Angeles. Similarly, fire is raging in an area of 13,690 acres in Pasadena. Apart from this, fire is still raging in 770 acres of land in Hearst, 394 acres in Lydia and 960 acres in Kenneth. While the fire in small areas of Woodley, Olivas and Sunset has been extinguished.
Clouds of black smoke cover the sky
The smoke rising from the fire in residential buildings and other structures has covered the sky of Los Angeles. Due to strong winds, this smoke is also flying but its dense presence remains in the sky. This is also hampering the flying of planes and helicopters.
Wind speed reduced a bit
When the fire broke out on Tuesday, the wind speed in the area was up to 160 kilometers per hour. Because of this, the fire spread very fast. But on Thursday, the wind speed was felt to be less; it is expected to reduce further by the end of the week. However, it is still fast enough to thwart the efforts of fire control.
Fire also broke out in the city of Calabasas in California
A major incident of fire has also taken place in the city of Calabasas in California. The fire that broke out here on Thursday has spread over one thousand acres of land. Calabasas is one of the most affluent cities in America and many celebrities reside here. The damage caused by this fire has not yet been estimated.
